Lower Back Pain, Walking, and the Path Back to Daily Life
Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek care, and for many, it affects far more than just movement. It can interfere with sleep, work, exercise, mood, weight management, and the simple activities that help people feel like themselves again.
For some people, lower back pain develops after an injury. For others, it is connected to long-term changes in the spine, such as arthritis, degenerative disc changes, stiffness, inflammation, or muscle imbalance. When pain becomes chronic, even healthy habits like walking can become difficult.
This was the case for Dean.
Dean was a middle-aged man who had recently gone through a divorce. Like many people dealing with major life changes, he found himself under stress and struggling with recent weight gain. He wanted to lose weight and begin feeling healthier again, but there was one major problem: walking caused a great deal of lower back pain.
That was especially frustrating because walking was more than exercise for Dean. It was also a form of stress relief. Being newly single, he wanted to get back into a better routine, clear his mind, and take steps toward feeling better physically and emotionally. But his chronic lower back pain kept getting in the way.
Dean’s lower back pain was related to arthritis and degenerative discs in the lower spine. These conditions can limit mobility, create stiffness, irritate surrounding tissues, and make daily movement more uncomfortable. While every case is different, many people with similar spinal changes benefit from conservative care that focuses on improving joint function, reducing irritation, and supporting better movement.
Dean began with a month of regular chiropractic care. He responded well. Over time, he was able to begin walking again, which was a major step forward. However, he still had ongoing discomfort in his lower back.
At that point, his lower back pain likely would have continued to improve in the following months with more traditional chiropractic care. But because Dean wanted to keep progressing and return to the activities he enjoyed, he was offered a trial of seven Class IV regenerative medical laser® treatments for his low back pain, along with the chiropractic care he was already receiving.
Class IV regenerative medical laser® therapy is used in some offices as part of a conservative care plan for back and neck pain. The goal is to support the body’s natural healing processes, reduce discomfort, and improve recovery when paired with traditional treatments. In our office, we often see healing and recovery times improve significantly, sometimes by as much as 70%, when regenerative medical laser® therapy is combined with traditional treatments for back and neck pain.
For Dean, this combination made a meaningful difference.
After completing his care plan, Dean experienced near full resolution of his lower back pain. Even more importantly, he was able to get back to walking and enjoying the activities that mattered to him. What started as a frustrating cycle of pain, stress, and limited movement became a success story of progress, recovery, and renewed confidence.
Dean’s story is a reminder that lower back pain does not have to define your daily life. When pain prevents you from walking, exercising, working, or enjoying time with family and friends, it may be time to look at treatment options that address both the symptoms and the underlying movement issues contributing to the problem.
A personalized approach may include chiropractic care, mobility work, lifestyle guidance, and additional therapies such as Class IV regenerative medical laser® treatment when appropriate. The right care plan depends on the cause of the pain, the patient’s health history, and their personal goals.
If lower back pain is keeping you from walking, losing weight, staying active, or managing stress, help may be available. Conservative care can be a powerful first step toward moving better, feeling better, and getting back to the life you enjoy.
Be well, Dean.
