The park is part of the Raleigh Greenway system and includes natural surface trails as well as paved trails. The south side of the park includes a nature preserve. Lake Johnson Park has three parking lots two of the parking lots are located on the south side of the lake the other parking lot is located on the eastern side of the lake on Lake Dam Road.

Some of the common activities you’ll find people participating in at the lake include kayaking, paddle boarding, canoeing, fishing, dog walking, walking, running, picnicking, grilling out, and enjoying the scenery.

There is a waterfront center located directly on the lake where you can rent canoes and kayaks and fishing poles. On the far western side of the lake, there’s also a pool. Lake Johnson's public pool includes a baby pool, a seasonal pool, a lap, and a recreational pool.

The western side of the lake is unpaved and wraps around through the woods. Bikes are not permitted on the southern western half of the trail. The eastern part of the lake is paved and wraps around the Eastern in Southeastern part at Lake Johnson there are several large hills along the paved trail.

Throughout the park you’ll find wildlife, which includes Osprey, Canadian Geese, I’ve personally seen a bald eagle at Lake Johnson. It is not uncommon to find turtles basking in the sun. Squirrels are also commonly seen at the park. There are several posts on the next-door Lake Johnson website mentioning a pack of Coyotes that frequent the park.

Recreational Activities

The lake is also very popular for fishing. The lake has Bass, crappy, catfish, carp, bream, and shell crackers. There is a large bridge on the western side of the lake, which is very popular with fishermen. There’s also a boathouse centrally located by the northwestern parking lot where you can sit and enjoy the lake views. The fall is especially nice at Lake Johnson Park as the humidity from the summer months clears out and the leaves begin to change.

Lake Johnson is an excellent Lakeside Park with lots of recreational activities to part takes in. Parking during certain months can be very crowded. I recommend parking at the less known Eastern parking lot off Lake Dam Road.
